America Ferrera rallied Philly Latino voters for Harris

In Fairhill, Ferrera praised Harris as a champion of the middle class: a protector of homeowners facing foreclosure, workers at risk of wage theft, seniors at risk of elder abuse, and DACA dreamers struggling with health problems .

“She is someone who will bring us closer to realizing our shared vision of America,” Ferrera said. “One in which the middle class has a fighting chance.”

Quetcy Lozada, a Philadelphia City Council member who represents the neighborhood, joined her. She noted that Trump has repeatedly stated that he will close the Education Department if he returns to the White House.

“You're sitting here in 19133. In this district, many of our schools are among the lowest performing compared to other schools in the city of Philadelphia,” she said. “Completely abolishing the Department of Education will have a huge negative impact on communities like this.”

Fairhill is predominantly Puerto Rican, who typically lean Democratic. Latinos from other countries are much more in the game, and this is where Republicans are seeing advances.

A recent report in the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that while Philadelphia votes overwhelmingly Democratic overall, poorer neighborhoods are most likely to swing Republican.

Ferrera has been pursuing Harris for at least a decade, since she was California's attorney general. After Harris won her Senate seat in 2016, Ferrera asked her to speak at an event she was planning. She recalled Harris urging people to work together.

“She told us the fight for social justice is not a marathon. “It’s a relay race,” Ferrera said. “The baton is in our hands.”
