As the USDA list shows, several schools in Michigan have received products involved in the Listeria recall

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), approximately nine schools in Michigan may have received products recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

These products, approximately 11.7 million pounds of ready-to-eat BrucePac meat and poultry, were sold by various brands including Target's Good and Gather, Kroger, Meijer, Trader Joe's and more.

However, some recalled products are unbranded, so consumers are encouraged to search by product type or name, officials said.

According to a list provided by the USDA, the following schools in Michigan are affected by the recall:

  • Bangor High School – 801 W. Arlington St., Bangor, MI 49013
  • East Rockford Middle School – 8615 9 Mile Rd. NE, Rockford, MI 49341
  • Flowers Early Learning – 405 S. Williams St., Decatur, MI 49045
  • Ferris State University (The Quad) – 805 Campus Dr., Big Rapids, MI 49307
  • Mildred C. Wells Academy – 248 9th Street, Benton Harbor, MI 49022
  • Muskegon Catholic School – 1145 W. Laketon Ave., Muskegon, MI 49441
  • Northwest Michigan Human Services-HS – 3963 3 Mile Rd N., Traverse City, MI 49686
  • Pansophia Academy – 52 Abbott Ave., Coldwater, MI 49036
  • Weymouth Child Development – 346 State St., Charlotte, MI 48813

The schools involved in the recall were not part of the USDA's national school lunch and breakfast programs and could have purchased food directly from other providers, officials said.

In response to the recall, Ferris State University officials said they followed all safety precautions and discarded all affected food. They issued the following statement:

“The health and safety of Ferris State University students, staff and community members is our top priority. The university's food service team became aware of a recall of some meat products from a grocer on Oct. 10, followed by a message from the Michigan Department of Education said Friday that some of the potentially affected products were immediately delivered to the university. Ferris State typically uses such prepared meats in the grab-and-go areas of The Quad dining hall and The Market store. We have no evidence that the affected meat was served to students.”

USDA officials first announced the recall on October 9 after members of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed that Listeria monocytogenes had been found during routine product testing of BrucePac RTE poultry products.

Consuming foods containing L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can cause the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache and stiff neck
  • confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Cramps, which are sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems

According to the USDA, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming the products.

However, anyone who is concerned about a medical condition is advised to contact their doctor or healthcare provider.
