Ben Duckett: England are expected to be capable of batting in the opening match against Pakistan

If Duckett suffers a serious injury, uncapped Jordan Cox is the backup batsman in the England squad, although a possible absence of Duckett could also make room for captain Ben Stokes to return to the team.

Stokes missed his fourth consecutive Test with a hamstring injury, with Pope captaining in his place.

On Tuesday, Stokes completed an intense running session, spending about 40 minutes batting in the nets and then bowling three overs in the middle during the tea break.

After pace bowler Josh Hull was ruled out of the tour with a quadriceps injury, England will lose another member of their squad when pace bowler Olly Stone returns to Britain to get married on Saturday.

Stone is unlikely to return to Pakistan for the second Test, also in Multan, which begins next Tuesday.

That would leave Matthew Potts as the only substitute, meaning few options for rotation after England spent 149 overs on the field in Pakistan's first innings.

At the moment, the tourists have no plans to call up another pace bowler.

It was a grueling introduction to Test cricket for Carse. The Durham man claimed his first wicket when Naseem Shah converted a catch to leg slip and then pinned Ameer Jamal's leg.

“The last two days were extremely tough conditions,” said the 29-year-old. “Being able to get a few wickets today felt rewarding. It was hard work.”

“The boys will rest and bat positively tonight to put the Pakistan bowlers under pressure.”
