Bob Costas makes a brutal mistake on Anthony Volpe's unreal diving catch

Bob Costas doesn't do himself any favors with the way he refers to the Yankees-Royals as the ALDS, and that was true again at the end of the eighth quarter in Game 3 on Wednesday night.

The famous broadcaster mistakenly called it an Anthony Volpe “Diving Catch,” initially calling it a hit for Vinnie Pasquantino before eventually correcting himself when he realized what had happened.

Pasquantino threw an 0-2 pitch to short center field, but Volpe rushed in to make the impressive play and get the second pitch of the bottom of the inning.

Still, the 72-year-old Costas was quick to call it a base hit.

“Line drive, base hit to center field,” Costas said on the call before the ball even hit the ground. “It was suffocating out there. I don’t know if it was caught.”

“It got caught,” interjected Ron Darling, who conducted analysis for the TBS broadcast.

“Oh my God. What a game,” Costas then jumped in again.

Costas has come under fire from baseball fans for the way he calls plays during the playoffs, from a lack of enthusiasm to a seeming bias against the Yankees.

Earlier this week, he was caught on a hot mic apparently expressing his fears about having to read a commercial for CNN.

“A CNN promo?” Costas asks, seemingly unaware that he’s on the radio.

“This puts me in a difficult position,” he said after breaking a brief silence.

Earlier in the game, Costas came under fire for hitting a Giancarlo Stanton double in the game's first run that lacked enthusiasm.

The Yankees picked up the win with a 3-2 victory over the Royals on Wednesday, securing themselves one win away from advancing to the ALCS.
