Bowen Yang denies making fun of Chappell Roan Saturday Night Live following backlash from the singer's fans who said he had joked about her mental health.

The comedian took to social media to defend the “Weekend Update” segment in which he appeared dressed as Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo. In this segment, Yang compares the attention the hippo receives to that of Roan, who recently called her fans “creepy” for not respecting their boundaries.

“Oh my God. 'Taunts'???” Yang shared on his Instagram Stories. “If my personal stance and the piece aren’t clear about supporting her, then I think that’s it.”

Yang continued, “Everything she's ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can tie it into another story about boundaries or whatever. “Need the hose (now)…”

Roan has been open about her mental health struggles and recently canceled a series of performances at the All Things Go Music Festival to “prioritize” her health amid criticism of her political views.

“Things have become overwhelming over the last few weeks and I’m really feeling it,” Roan said in a statement posted to her Instagram Stories on Friday, September 27. “I'm feeling pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present at my performances and give the best show possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

Yang is a huge Roan fan and recently interviewed her for it interview Magazine, in which he said, “Vinyl is in my living room, front and center, because it's just so pretty.”

The Saturday Night Live Star said that Roan helped him “through a lot of shit when I was depressed as fuck.”

“Gays care. And as long as you have a queer fan base – yes, all of humanity is a bit toxic, a bit unethical, immoral, whatever – the queers will make you feel good. This is the guardrail,” Yang told Roan.
