BrucePac is recalling more than 9 million pounds of meat due to listeria

Precooked meat manufacturer BrucePac has issued a recall for nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to possible Listeria contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Wednesday.

According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) notice, approximately 9,986,245 pounds of product are affected by the recall after routine testing revealed evidence of Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat BrucePac poultry. The presence of L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis infection when adulterated food is consumed.

Affected products have been shipped to establishments and distributors across the country, including restaurants and other food establishments. The production date of the affected foods is not until Oct. 8, meaning they are likely still in consumers' refrigerators or freezers and available on shelves, in restaurants and other establishments, FSIS warned.

Which BrucePac products are being recalled?

Ready-to-eat meat and poultry products manufactured from June 19, 2024 to October 8, 2024 with the establishment number “51205 or P-51205” on the packaging are subject to recall.

BrucePac and the USDA have not yet released a complete product list. While many meats are subject to recall, the USDA determined that ready-to-eat chicken products are the source of Listeria monocytogenes.

What to do if you have a recalled product?

The USDA advises consumers who have purchased these products not to eat them and instead to throw them away or return them to the point of purchase. Dealers who have the products in stock are also advised not to sell recalled products and to discard or return them.

There have been no confirmed reports of side effects associated with these products, but anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact their doctor.

Listeriosis or listeria poisoning symptoms

Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a foodborne bacterial infection most commonly caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for older adults, people with weak immune systems and pregnant people.

According to the USDA, symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and/or life-threatening infection of newborns
  • Death

People in higher risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food should seek medical attention and inform health care providers about consuming contaminated food, the USDA said.
