Buncombe County, Asheville City School officials are providing an update on when students can return to school

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – Buncombe County and Asheville City school officials provided an update on students and staff returning to school during a press conference Thursday morning.

In Buncombe County, Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson said that 44 out of 45 schools have electricity, 34 out of 45 schools have water and 38 out of 45 schools have internet connection.

The district, along with Incident Management, Asheville City Schools and seven charter schools, has developed a plan to distribute drinking water to all public schools, whether county, city or charter.

Headmistress Dr. Asheville City Schools' Maggie Fehrman said non-potable water is available on all campuses and they are working to find additional sources of drinking water so students can get back to a full day of instruction.

The district is also working to create a new bus route due to damaged or washed out roads and bridges following Helene.

Asheville district leaders are working together to ensure schools are ready for students to return. Dr. Fehrman said she is confident all schools will be able to reopen to students on Monday, Oct. 28.

No return date has been announced in Buncombe County. Dr. Jackson said they are confident they will be able to announce a reopening date soon.

Dr. Fehrman said the district will be sending out more information to families in the district later this week with additional details on how to prepare for schools.

Right now, she said, the biggest concern is having enough drinking water to return to a full school day.

The school board will meet on Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. to discuss additional possible calendar changes.
