Cal fans break through ESPN's “College GameDay” barricades before showdown in Miami

Cal fans Hardly able to contain their excitement for the first-ever visit to ESPN's “College GameDay” before the Golden Bears' first ACC home game, they burst through the gates surrounding Memorial Glade on campus before the official opening.

Videos posted on social media showed the chaos that erupted early Saturday morning.

“The Cal crowd waiting in line for College GameDay burst through the gates before the official opening,” Write For California’s Avinash Kunnath wrote in a post on X.

“Complete chaos at Berkeley. There are not enough security guards to organize the crowd.”

Kunnath shared a second video showing a “second wave” of fans breaking through the fences, estimating the crowd to be in “thousands” around midnight.

The hosts are the Bears No. 8-ranked Miami in a rare trip for the Hurricanes. In their only previous visit to Berkeley in 1990, Miami won 52-24. They defeated Nebraska in the Rose Bowl and won the 2001 national championship. They are 2-1 in away games against San Diego State.

“This is a great opportunity,” Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. “Opportunities like this don't come along often, especially with all the bells and whistles of 'GameDay' and the fact that Miami is one of the top 10 teams in the country.”

A win for Cal would be the team's first ACC win in the new conference's first home game. Cal is also seeking its first win against a ranked team since beating No. 21 Oregon in 2020.
