Car accident at FC Cincinnati Marco Angulo in Ecuador

FC Cincinnati player Marco Angulo, currently on loan at an Ecuadorian soccer club, was involved in a car accident in Ecuador early Monday that killed at least one person, FC Cincinnati officials said in a statement.

According to a statement from FC Cincinnati, Angulo, 22, was hospitalized following the accident in Quito, Ecuador. Further information on Angulo's health was not immediately available, a team official told The Enquirer.

In a press release from Angulo's club in Ecuador, team officials there acknowledged that Angulo had been injured in the accident and described his condition as “a guarded prognosis.”

“FC Cincinnati is devastated to learn that Marco Angulo has been hospitalized following a car accident in Ecuador,” FC Cincinnati’s statement said Monday afternoon. “He remains in the care of medical professionals in Quito and the FCC is working to obtain further information and provide all possible support to Marco. Our thoughts are with him and his family as we hope for his recovery, and our condolences go out to the families of those deceased and injured in this tragic accident.”

FC Cincinnati acquired Angulo ahead of the 2023 season as one of the best available midfielders in South America. In 2023, he achieved mixed results on the pitch and was loaned out to the Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito of Ecuador's top football league this year. It was a personnel change that was intended to serve his further development.

In August, FC Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright indicated during an August press conference that Angulo might return to FC Cincinnati, although “LDU” Quito had the option to acquire him permanently after the loan period expired.

Angulo then had mixed results on the field with the Liga Deportiva Universitaria Quito, and Albright said he expected Angulo to return to FC Cincinnati, if only so the club could reassess its position on the player.

Albright reiterated in August, as he did in a spring interview with The Enquirer, that the 22-year-old Angulo is still young and developing.

“Marco’s situation is a little different. He plays a few things. “Still a very young player,” Albright said. “With him we will evaluate at the end of the year: 'Is this a player we want to bring back into our team?' But we follow these guys all the time and watch their games so we know.

The Enquirer will update this story.
