Here's a recent football story from the AP:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — News from Manchester United this week said its greatest manager, Alex Ferguson, would end his lucrative role as global ambassador.

Ferguson's most recent successor, Erik ten Hag, will remain in office for the time being.

That seemed far from certain before the recent international break, with United suffering their worst start to the season in the English Premier League era.

Yet Ten Hag survived a visit to Manchester by club co-owners Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer this month, while Ferguson's contract – worth millions of dollars – expires at the end of the season.

Ferguson is United's most successful manager, having won 28 major trophies, including 13 league titles and two Champions League titles.

“Such a lack of respect. It’s absolutely scandalous,” United star Eric Cantona posted on social media.

Few would have predicted that Ferguson's role would take precedence over Ten Hag's at a time of intense scrutiny for the Dutchman.

Even Ratcliffe, who paid $1.3 billion for a 27.7 percent stake in the 20-time English champions in February, declined to publicly back Ten Hag when asked this month if he had confidence in have his manager.

However, amid this speculation, Ten Hag is preparing for Saturday's game against Brentford, where he will aim to secure just United's third league win of the season and first since September 14. United are also on a five-game winning streak following the game at Old Trafford.

It is this form that has increased speculation about his position, but he may have emerged from the international break even stronger after someone seen as a leading candidate to replace him was taken off the market.

United's Thomas Tuchel was reportedly under consideration during the off-season, but he was unveiled as England's new manager on Wednesday. Another potential candidate was Mauricio Pochettino, hired by the United States last month.

Guardiola has doubts

Tuchel's appointment also gives Manchester City fans new hope that Pep Guardiola could stay beyond his current contract, which runs until the end of the season.

It was only on Tuesday that reports described Guardiola as England's “dream candidate” until it emerged that Tuchel would succeed Gareth Southgate.

United's difficulties in replacing Ferguson are an example of the task facing City when Guardiola eventually steps down. Ten Hag is the fifth permanent coach since Ferguson retired following his last league title in 2013. Since then, United have not been close to winning the league title.

Guardiola has enjoyed a period of unprecedented dominance for City, including six league titles in the last seven years.

He won 15 major trophies in his eight years at the club. That's already double the time he has remained in any managerial position, and he has shown no signs of extending his contract. Last week he confirmed that his close friend and City football director Txiki Begiristain would be stepping down next year, adding to uncertainty over his future.

A hearing is also ongoing into Man City's alleged financial breaches, which if confirmed could result in a fine, points deduction or relegation.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

If Guardiola eventually leaves, City can only hope for as smooth a transition as has been experienced at Liverpool since Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.

Nine wins from his first ten games in charge is a record for a new Liverpool manager and the Dutchman's team are leading the league.

Next up for Liverpool on Sunday is a Chelsea team who have also made an unusually positive start under a new manager.

Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea are fourth in the table and their only league defeat came against City on the opening day of the season.

What a change for a club that has endured a turbulent period under American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, with Maresca becoming the third full-time manager since taking over in 2022, following Graham Potter and Pochettino.

The man in power when Boehly and Clearlake took control was, of course, Tuchel.
