Cleveland Guardians score against New York Yankees ALCS Game 1

NEW YORK – The road to the World Series continues for the Guardians in the Big Apple.

The first pitch of Game 1 of the American League Championship Series will take place on Monday at 7:38 p.m. when the No. 2 Guardians take on the No. 1 New York Yankees at (new) Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees had a few days of rest after defeating the Kansas City Royals 3-1 in their series. The Guardians just pulled off an emotional Game 5 victory over the Detroit Tigers that literally had Progressive Field shaking as Lane Thomas rounded the bases after a grand slam home run.

The Yankees struck first.

Alex Cobb left a 2-1 sinker over center of the plate, and Juan Soto crushed it for a solo home run that was sent to the bullpen in right-center field.

It's 1-0 for the Yankees. New York rallied with four singles but couldn't get a run across the plate in the first two innings. Soto did just that with one shot in the third round.

The Yankees put runners on the corners with two outs for Gleyber Torres, who grounded into an inning-ending forceout. The Yankees have already stranded four runners tonight. Alex Cobb didn't look particularly sharp, but he kept the Yankees off the field, and that's what matters for Cleveland.

The Guardians scored again on a single in the second inning, this time by Jhonkensy Noel, but Rodon again worked to retire the team.

The Guardians and Yankees will continue their search for the first run of the series until the end of the second round.

Alex Cobb worked his way in and out of trouble in the first inning.

Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto opened the first inning with back-to-back singles, but Cobb recovered well, striking out Aaron Judge and getting Giancarlo Stanton on a flyout to left field with two outs.

David Fry struck out Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon and later advanced to second base with a wild pitch, but the Guardians were unable to bring him home as Rodon struck out Lane Thomas to end the first inning.
