Derek and Hayley Hough will detail their emergency craniotomy and recovery in a new documentary

Derek and Hayley Hough are stepping into the spotlight in a new way.

The couple have been documenting the past year after Hayley underwent an emergency craniotomy to treat a ruptured blood vessel last December.

“We actually have a lot to share,” Derek, 39, told The Post exclusively on “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday. “So this was just the beginning (tonight) of revealing a little bit more about the story. But we actually documented the entire year and the entire process in detail. That wasn't actually planned. It just started happening. Our friends started filming and it turned into something beautiful. That's why we're excited that after tonight we can start telling more of the story and eventually share the rest of the story. It's remarkable. This woman is remarkable.”

A year after her medical emergency, Hayley celebrated her return to the ballroom with an emotional performance alongside her husband. The two received a standing ovation after dancing to Benson Boone's “Beautiful Things” on Tuesday night.

“It's always incredible to perform with him, but now, after such a traumatic experience, it's even more powerful,” said Hayley. “And I'm just grateful to always be able to be on stage with him and especially to be back in the ballroom. This is a very special place for both of us. And coming back from a time where I didn’t even know if it would ever be possible for me to dance here again, and just being here tonight is really something special.”

Derek went on to discuss the aftermath of the harrowing incident that occurred during their Symphony of Dance tour stop in Washington, DC.

“The doctors told me in all seriousness, she really couldn't survive. It was that bad. And again, we'll go into more detail, but then they told me she won't be the same,” Derek told The Post. “They pretty much told me I lost her. Then fast forward to this moment, not just to see her here, but to dance the way she dances tonight in front of all these people in the place that is so special to us. I mean, it’s really beautiful.”

After such a traumatic experience, Hayley saw her husband, with whom she tied the knot in 2023, in a new light.

“It was really nice to see him in a caring position because he was my carer for months after the surgery,” she revealed. “And it was just so beautiful. And that made me appreciate and love him even more. And I’m so grateful for everything he’s done to support me because without him I wouldn’t be here.”

And Derek couldn't be prouder of his other half.

“I knew she was strong, but I had no idea how strong,” he gushed. “She always had a smile on her face. She had this amazing ability to stay present and stay in the moment, which really helped us all. We were always so worried and worried about what happened, about the future. And she just said, “Look at that sun, look at that flower.” She was in the moment and – wow. She was a great role model for all of us.”

And what's next for the dance duo?

“We’re going on tour,” the “DWTS” judge exclaimed. “It’s actually a holiday tour. So it's a time of miracles, giving back and gratitude. And we can't wait to give back to the amazing audience that has shown us so much love. And the show has already turned out to be one of the most incredible shows we've ever put on. Graphically, the music, the costumes, it will be incredible.”
