Donald Trump-Endorsed “God Bless the USA” Bibles Made in China: Reports

According to the Associated Press, “God Bless the USA” Bibles endorsed by former President Donald Trump have been printed in China, even as the Republican candidate has continually criticized U.S.-China trade.

The “God Bless the USA Bible,” named after the Lee Greenwood song often played at Trump rallies, bills itself as the “only Bible endorsed by President Trump.” While the Bible's website states that it is not affiliated with a political campaign, the product has become known as the “Trump Bible” due to its role in promoting the product.

Global trade records obtained by the AP show that about 120,000 copies of the Republican candidate's “God Bless the USA” Bible were shipped to the United States from the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou between early February and late March.

The estimated value of the shipments was less than $3 per Bible, or a total of $342,000, according to the news outlet. The reserve price for the “Trump Bible” is $59.99, bringing the potential sales proceeds to approximately $7 million.

Many Bibles are printed in China, but the revelation appears to be at odds with Trump's political stance toward the country. The Trump campaign did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Donald Trump is critical of trade with China and wants to overcome trade barriers

During Trump's presidency, the U.S. and China were locked in a years-long trade war that appeared to be broken with a trade deal in early 2020. Later that year, he criticized the Chinese government for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, calling it the “Chinese virus” that many viewed as racist and dangerous to Asian Americans, USA TODAY previously reported.

The Republican platform for the 2024 election calls for an end to imports of essential goods from China and a halt to Chinese investment in American real estate and industries.

During the election campaign, Trump spoke of China as a competitor of the USA and called for more manufacturing, energy production and AI development to be located in the USA so that the domestic economy can flourish.

President Joe Biden has maintained many of Trump's tariffs against China and increased tariffs on select items such as Chinese electric vehicles and solar panels. But this presidential campaign, Trump has also called for a 60% tariff on imports from China, and many financial experts agree that the cost burden of the tariffs will largely be passed on to consumers.

Trump Bibles have caused controversy in Oklahoma schools

Oklahoma Schools Superintendent Ryan Walters recently requested $3 million, in addition to last year's $3 million, to provide a Bible in every public school classroom in the state.

The bid documents indicated that vendors must meet certain specifications to supply the state Department of Education with 55,000 Bibles, which closely matches the description of Lee Greenwood's “God Bless the USA Bible,” commonly referred to as the “Trump Bible.” comes.

According to The Oklahoman, part of the USA TODAY network, legal experts said the original rules could be viewed as “bid rigging” and violate the Oklahoma Constitution by using taxpayer money to benefit a political candidate. Seller requirements for the 55,0000 Bibles recently changed, loosening ties to the “Trump Bible.” These revised terms allow the seller to separately provide Bibles and other documents such as copies of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
