Donald Trump will hold his first campaign rally in the Philly suburbs on Monday

Donald Trump travels to Montgomery County on Monday.

The visit to a town hall in Oaks will be Trump's first public campaign rally in the Philadelphia suburbs of the 2024 campaign. It will also be his fourth event in Pennsylvania since his return to Butler, the site of his assassination, on Oct. 5.

Trump has recently focused on the white working-class communities that helped get him elected in 2016. He attended a private fundraiser in Bucks County this spring but focused his campaign elsewhere. But the Philadelphia suburbs are an important part of the equation for winning the state. Most of Pennsylvania's voters live in the suburbs. Suburban voters gave President Joe Biden the most votes of any regional group in the state in 2020, and Trump got his second-largest haul of votes from the suburbs, behind only rural parts of the state.

Oaks, home of the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center & Fairgrounds where Trump will appear, is surrounded by Collegeville, King of Prussia, and Phoenixville in Chester County, all places that trended blue in the last election. But Republicans who want to win nationally will have to narrow those margins.

Trump's town hall will focus on the economy, according to his campaign. A town hall meeting planned for Scranton on Wednesday turned into a rally with Trump's usual rambling speech.

To appeal to more moderate voters in the Montgomery County area, Trump may need to refine his message. A quarter of Republican primary voters in Montgomery County voted for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the GOP primary, months after she dropped out of the race. They have become a bloc that Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is trying to appeal to in a sharply divided state.

“Thanks to the Harris-Biden administration’s crackdown on American energy and fracking in Pennsylvania, gas and diesel prices reached historic highs,” the Trump campaign said in a statement ahead of the campaign rally. “More broadly, Pennsylvania has been the victim of America’s unilateral trade agreements, which have allowed foreign adversaries to undermine our industries.”

With three weeks left and the race dead, weekly visits are increasing.

Trump's visit comes the same day Harris will campaign in Erie, a key county on the other side of the state. The suburbs are a popular campaign stop in the coming days, with Harris' husband Doug Emhoff visiting this weekend and first lady Jill Biden and Trump's vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, campaigning in Montgomery County on Tuesday.

Both campaigns and outside groups that support them have spent an avalanche of money in the state — more than in any other battleground. And they've racked up more visits here than anywhere else to secure the 19 electoral votes that could very well decide who gets into the White House.
