Early voting begins October 17 in Buncombe County

ASHEVILLE – Nearly three weeks after Tropical Storm Helene hit western North Carolina, voters will soon show up at Buncombe County polling stations to cast their ballots in this year's general election.

In North Carolina, early voting begins October 17th.

In Buncombe County, which suffered widespread damage and destruction from Helene, ten polling locations will be open for early voting daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Nov. 1, according to the county elections department. Polls close at 3:00 p.m. on the last day of early voting, Saturday, November 2nd.

According to Corinne Duncan, the county's elections director, the department was planning to open 14 polling locations for early voting before Helene struck. But after the storm hit the region, the number dropped to 10.

“These are all high-capacity sites, and they are widely distributed throughout the county,” Duncan said.

A third of poll workers were unable to staff polling places for early voting, Duncan said, so the county elections board approved the reduction in polling places on Oct. 8. Because of Helene, the authorities also approved extended voting times on the weekend.

Depending on the county, voters can choose any early voting location that suits them best.
