October's Hunter Supermoon will light up the fall sky Thursday evening, marking the third supermoon of 2024 and the first full moon of the fall season. In addition, this month's celestial event has something different from the others.

Not only is October's full moon a supermoon, it will also be just 222,055 miles from Earth – making it the closest and brightest supermoon of the year, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

When is the full moon in October?

October's Hunter Supermoon first appeared in the night sky on Tuesday, October 15, and peaked at 6:26 a.m. CT on Thursday morning. However, it was below the horizon at the time of its highest illumination, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, which urged sky watchers to wait until sunset Thursday to see it rise.

According to NASA, the Hunter Supermoon will be visible Thursday evening through Friday morning.

The next full moon to light up the sky will be on Friday, November 15th. This moon – also called the Beaver Moon – will reach peak luminosity at 4:29 p.m., according to NASA, after becoming visible early on Thursday, November 14th.

Yes. According to NASA, November's full moon will be the last consecutive supermoon this year.

When is the last full moon in 2024?

According to experts, the last full moon of 2024 will appear on Sunday, December 15th. This full moon – also called the “Cold Moon” – will peak around 3:02 a.m. this morning.
