Experts share three bold NY Yankees predictions, do you agree?

While the present looks bright for the New York Yankees, the future is a little less clear.

As of Friday afternoon, the Yankees are two wins away from a World Series berth, their first since 2009. New York has committed to going “all-in” for the 2024 season by making several high-stakes moves, which came through The acquisition of Juan Soto was highlighted.

So far, this “all-in” approach has worked perfectly, but once the 2024 season comes to an end, the team will have to make a number of difficult decisions. The fates of players like Soto, Alex Verdugo, Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres will all be decided before Opening Day 2025.

With that in mind, Bleacher Report editors have added some notable Yankees players to their list Predictions for 19 MLB players with a contract option through 2025.

Do you agree with their predictions?

SP Gerrit Cole

Situation: Cole can forgo $144 million between 2025 and 2028 and become a free agent if the Yankees do not extend his contract for a tenth year at $36 million.

B/R prediction: Cole forgoes $144 million between 2025 and 2028, and the Yankees agree to add $36 million for the 10th year.

Reaction: Although Cole looked a little less sharp this year compared to his Cy Young season, he still showed he can be a dominant front-line starter. Cole should be able to maintain his elite form for at least another season or two as the Yankees look to extend their championship window beyond this season.

With that in mind, the Yankees should actually approach Year 10 and do everything they can to make Cole a member of the franchise by the time he retires.

1B Anthony Rizzo

Situation: Yankees can exercise $17 million option for 2025.

B/R prediction: Yankees decline $17M option for 2025.

Reaction: While I agree that the Yankees should and will decline this option, I am not closing the door on a reunion between the two sides. Rizzo has shown that he can still be a reliable player in certain situations, even though his days as a starter for a contender may be behind him.

Would I sign Rizzo at a reduced price as a backup player and rotation infielder/DH?

Absolutely.

SP/RP Luke Weaver

Situation: Yankees can exercise $2.5 million option for 2025.

B/R prediction: Yankees exercise $2.5 million option for 2025.

Reaction: Yes, no joke.

This is a no-brainer for New York and is by far the easiest decision they will make this offseason. The harder question is: Do you pursue a more experienced closer or do you trust Weaver in that role in 2025?

They trusted Clay Holmes as the closer in 2024 despite having limited experience, and that didn't work out. They should try to avoid the same mistake and use Weaver as a trusted reliever next season after he exercises his option.
