Fans go to war after TKR loses to power outage, and opponents | News Extra

Those associated with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) game in Guyana overnight are surrounded by Trinbago Knight Riders fans angry that the game ended due to a power outage that resulted in the TKR's innings the lights went out.

The Barbados Royals achieved the goal, eliminating TKR and angering thousands of fans who demanded a rematch that Guyana would never host a game again, with unsubstantiated claims of sabotage being circulated.

If TKR had won, the team would have been in the final.

It was suggested that in such cases the CPL should have allowed for a reserve day to replay a game or had a contingency plan to avoid the blackout.

In response to the debacle, Guyana's Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) issued a joint statement.

According to the statement, all CPL matches at Providence Stadium, Guyana are successfully powered by independent power producers at the National Stadium and not the GPL network. The GPL was always on standby to provide technical assistance to the stadium at all matches.

During the 19th over, three floodlights powered by an independent generator failed, resulting in a suspension of play. The on-call GPL technical team immediately began providing assistance, restoring power to two of three floodlights on the same circuit. Stadium technical staff and GPL worked diligently to restore power to the third floodlight, which experienced a technical fault in the underground cable supplying power to this floodlight. To make this headlight operational, a replacement cable was quickly installed. This was achieved around 10:51 p.m.

At this point the game was a mess.
