Flights at Newark Airport were delayed due to a mysterious “equipment failure” and possible hurricane chaos

Travelers leaving the city from Newark Liberty International Airport should expect possible flight delays Friday due to a mysterious “equipment failure” and possible chaos from Hurricane Milton, officials said.

According to the National Airspace System Status, authorities reported a “ground delay” at the airport until 10:59 p.m., with affected flights delayed an average of 15 minutes as of 6 p.m.

“Flights are still coming in and out. They are simply spaced out, causing delays,” said a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Due to the mysterious “equipment failure” and potential chaos caused by Hurricane Milton, authorities declared a “ground delay” at the airport until 10:59 p.m Christopher Sadowski

Flights arriving from areas devastated by Hurricane Milton may also have increased the “volume” of air traffic – a second factor cited for the delays at the travel hub, the spokeswoman said.

“The other thing is volume: There could also be weather-related delays related to hurricane season,” she said.

The details of the equipment failure were not immediately clear Friday, she said.

A ground stop was imposed at the airport earlier in the day, but was lifted at 4 p.m

The FAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Post.
