Following the indictment, the NFL places the Patriots' Jabrill Peppers on the exempt list

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The NFL has placed New England Patriots starting safety Jabrill Peppers on the Commissioner Exempt List, the league announced Wednesday.

While Peppers is on the list, they are not allowed to practice or participate in games.

According to police in Braintree, Massachusetts, Peppers pleaded not guilty Monday after being arrested Saturday on charges including strangulation and drug possession.

“I just want to be clear: any act of domestic violence is unacceptable to us as a team, whether players or staff. We are firmly against any kind of domestic violence. I know the organization's position.” “I fully support it,” coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday.

“With that in mind, I think Jabrill needs to continue to go through due process. We'll see how that works out. The league has placed him on the exempt list and that will give us time to gather more information. “He is not in the building at this time and we will discuss that later. As a father of three daughters, I definitely understand the gravity of the allegations and hope that they are not true.

Peppers, who turned 29 on Oct. 4, is a team captain and is in his eighth NFL season. This is his third season with the Patriots.

Police announced Peppers' arrest Monday, saying they responded to a disturbance at a residential address early Saturday morning when a caller indicated there had been an altercation between two people.

Peppers was charged with “assault, assault, battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B substance suspected to be cocaine.”

According to Braintree police, the woman claimed Peppers hit her, choked her “at least six times,” removed her clothing and took her outside. Police also said Peppers pushed the woman to the ground, pushed her head against a wall and put his hands around her neck to strangle her.

Peppers answered the door shirtless, nodded his head and told police, “I know what's going on,” the documents say. He was arrested without incident.

The police report also states that officers confiscated a “clear bag containing white powder” that later tested positive for cocaine.

Police said the woman was treated at home for injuries to her face and knees.

The woman told police that she and Peppers had been together “on and off” for about three years.

Peppers pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Monday morning in Quincy, Massachusetts District Court. He posted $2,500 bail and was ordered to stay away from the woman.

Peppers' attorney, Marc Brofsky, told the court that the evidence in the case “casts real doubt on the allegations, including the videotaped evidence.” He said Peppers agreed not to have contact with the woman.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 22nd, but Peppers was allowed to forgo his appearance.

The Patriots' next game is at home against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
