Former Premier League star George Baldock has died aged 31 after being discovered at his home.

According to Greek media, the right-back was found in his pool. However, it was tragically too late to save him.

Baldock is best remembered for his time at Sheffield United, where he spent seven years from 2017 to 2024 before leaving this summer.

He helped the Blades return to the Premier League in 2019 as a key member of the club and played every game the following season as they defied all odds to stay in the league.

The right-back failed to save them from relegation the next season, but remained loyal to them as they finally got back on their feet after two years in the Championship.

Injuries took their toll last season as his contract expired and he was allowed to leave on a free transfer.

And he made the decision to join Greek club Panathinaikos on a three-year contract and move to the country of his international loyalty.

Although Baldock was born in Buckingham, he was eligible to play for Greece through his grandmother and was first called up to the squad by Gus Poyet in May 2022.

He made his debut for the country the following month in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast.

The defender played twelve international matches for Greece.

The Greek Super League posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, writing: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sadness at the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer George Baldock and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.” .

Fans were devastated by the news of Baldock's death. One said: “Sad news. May he rest in peace.”

“Essentially I was looking for a great opportunity in my career and Panathinaikos gave it to me. When I found out about Panathinaikos' interest, I was thrilled and everything happened very quickly.

“Something inside me gave me a particularly positive aura about Panathinaikos' attitude. It is probably related to the stories of my father, who has Greek roots and the first football match he saw in his life was at a league match in the house of Panathinaikos.

“I could have moved to other leagues, but I chose Panathinaikos because I want to play in a top team, win titles and take part in European competitions.”
