Giuliani's attempts to overturn the 2020 election were thwarted in part by false numbers | Rudy Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani texted the wrong number as he tried to convince Michigan lawmakers to help overturn the 2020 election.

According to a document unsealed in federal court on Wednesday, December 7, 2020, Giuliani attempted to send a message asking an unspecified person to help with the plan to appoint a list of fake voters.

“So they must pass a joint resolution of the Legislature stating that the election is disputed, that there is an ongoing investigation by the Legislature, and that the electors sent by Governor Whitmer are not the official electors of the state of Michigan and do not fall within the safe Harbor deadline under Michigan law,” Giuliani wrote.

As Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election, his allies tried to appoint alternative slates of electors in the states he lost to send to Congress. These false voter rolls met in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona and signed certificates certifying that they were valid voters in their states. Trump's allies then attempted to send these certificates to Congress for counting on January 6, 2021. The plan failed.

Some of the voters have since been criminally charged, others have not. Some said they were told they would act as surrogates in the event Trump won court cases challenging the election results.

Prosecutors said Giuliani failed to send the message because “he entered the wrong number into his phone,” prosecutors wrote.

The detail was included in a legal brief from special counsel Jack Smith that was unsealed by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the federal election interference case against Trump.

The brief, which provides several new details about Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 race, argues why Trump should be held accountable – particularly why he is not entitled to immunity after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled , that presidents cannot be impeached for “official actions.” during his term of office.

Giuliani is an unnamed co-conspirator in the case.

He is also being prosecuted in Georgia and Arizona for his attempts to overturn the election results.

His license to practice law was revoked in New York and he was disbarred in Washington DC for his involvement in the scheme. He is also appealing a ruling that says he owes two Georgia poll workers nearly $150 million for defaming him after the 2020 election.

Giuliani has a history of sloppy cell phone use. According to New York magazine, he once accidentally called an NBC reporter and left a message in which he talked about foreign business and said, “We need a few hundred thousand.”

He also once appeared to accidentally send one of his passwords to a reporter.
