Guardians score against New York Yankees in ALCS Game 5

play

CLEVELAND – The Guardians were playing for their playoff lives in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday night.

With their backs against the wall, the Guardians hoped to force the series to New York for Game 6 and possibly 7. That seemed like a possibility when they took the lead early Saturday. But the Yankees rebounded with a big home run and won it with an even bigger home run in the 10th, and the Guardians could only watch as the Yankees celebrated their ticket to the World Series.

Here's how Game 5 unfolded with our live updates, analysis and highlights.

The Yankees reach the World Series after defeating the Guardians 5-2 in extra innings in Game 5 on Saturday.

The Guardians' surprising, incredible season ends with three wins shy of a trip to the World Series.

Juan Soto might have just sent the Yankees to the World Series.

After being fouled by Hunter Gaddis on consecutive pitches, Juan Soto smashed a fastball over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run that gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead in the 10th inning.

The Yankees are three outs away from winning the ALCS. The Guardians will be on top against Luke Weaver.

And Brayan Rocchio's error that extended the inning to Soto is significant.

For the second time in three games, the Guardians and Yankees will play extra innings. Hunter Gaddis comes in to pitch for Cleveland.

Emmanuel Clase made it through the ninth inning by retiring Aaron Judge on a flyout and striking out Giancarlo Stanton at all cutters. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a single to right field, but Oswaldo Cabrera grounded out to shortstop with a forceout after a nice play by Brayan Rocchio.

The Guardians will have a chance to win it at the end of the ninth. Bo Naylor is expected.

Jhonkensy Noel struck out with a runner on first to end the eighth inning, and the Guardians and Yankees will enter the ninth inning of Game 5 tied at 2-2.

Emmanuel Clase comes into play. His first two batters: Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Tim Herrin got Austin Wells, who hasn't looked good in this series, to an inning-ending double play.

At the end of the seventh quarter the score is 2-2. Tim Hill is still in the game for the Yankees.

Tim Hill got a double play ball off the bat of Andres Gimenez, and the Guardians and Yankees will enter the top of the seventh inning tied 2-2. Tim Herrin warms up to the Guardians.

Mark Leiter Jr. retired Jhonkensy Noel on a popup, and the Yankees turned to left-hander Tim Hil to face Bo Naylor, with Josh Naylor at first base and one out at sixth base.

Tanner Bibee was great – until his last pitch of the night.

With two outs in the sixth, Bibee Giancarlo Stanton scored 3-2, but he hit a slider and Stanton made it safely into the left field bleachers for a tying two-run home run.

The Stanton Homer's exit velocity was a ridiculous 117.5 miles per hour. One can only hope that the fan who caught it didn't break his hand, even from 446 feet away. That was put down.

Stanton now has four home runs in this ALCS.

Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles, setting up Aaron Judge with no one out, and the Guardians defended their 2-0 lead.

Bibee got the ground ball he needed and Brayan Rocchio and Andres Gimenez converted a 6-4-3 double play.

The Guardians have a 2-0 lead but can't extend it as Mark Leiter Jr. intentionally struck out Jose Ramirez and then induced a groundout off Lane Thomas' bat to end the inning.

Tanner Bibee comes out in the sixth inning and hits the top of the Yankees' line for the third time.

Steven Kwan came through for the Guardians with a two-out, RBI single back up the middle and scored for Andres Gimenez, who hit a double to left field to start the fifth inning.

Kwan has now reached base in 16 consecutive postseason games, which is a franchise playoff record.

It's 2-0 for the Guardians.

Tanner Bibee pitched five scoreless innings and had five strikeouts compared to three hits allowed. He was efficient and the best version of himself tonight.

The Guardians lead the Yankees 1-0 at the end of the fifth quarter.

Tanner Bibee has now given up 10 straight, is past the fourth inning and faces the bottom of the order in the fifth. The Guardians starter sails after a difficult start.

It looks like this play at the plate gave Tanner Bibee a chance to recover and calm down, as he recovered well after being hit hard early in the game. Bibee just struck out Aaron Judge to end the third inning and he is now up to four strikeouts tonight.

It's 1-0 for the Guardians.

The Guardians struck first in Game 5.

In a 10-pitch at-bat, Bo Naylor hit a double that scored Josh Naylor, who took off while throwing the pitch, to first.

The Guardians have a 1-0 lead, thanks in part to Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas' terrible decision to send Torres on in the first inning.

The second inning was much easier for Bibee, who went 1-2-3 for the bottom of the Yankees. Bibee struck out 30 pitches in two innings.

Carlos Rodon raced through the first inning, striking out Steven Kwan and David Fry and causing Jose Ramirez to ground out to end the inning.

The inning was significantly less stressful than Bibee's for a pitcher.

Jhonkensy Noel and Andres Gimenez had a great relay to keep Game 5 scoreless.

Gleyber Torres opened the first inning with a single, followed by Juan Soto drilling a double into the gap in right-center.

The Yankees made a pretty bad decision sending Torres home considering there were no outs in the inning and Gimenez made a perfect throw to the plate to save a run.

It's still goalless in the first half. Tanner Bibee then beat Aaron Judge before knocking out Giancarlo Stanton. He also hit Jazz Chisholm Jr. to load the bases, but Anthony Rizzo hit a flyout to end the inning without any damage.

After Torres and Soto both made great contact, this poor decision to send Torres to the plate is the type of move that slows momentum and allows Bibee and the Guardians to reset.

And Gimenez's defensive value to the Guardians cannot be understated.

Below is some pre-game information.
