The full moon names used in the Old Farmer's Almanac come from a variety of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, rather than just the full moon.

The earliest use of the term “Hunter's Moon” cited in the Oxford English Dictionary dates to 1710, the almanac says. Some sources suggest that other names for the Hunter's Moon include Sanguine or Blood Moon, which are associated with either the blood of the hunt or the color of the changing autumn leaves.

What is a Supermoon?

A supermoon is a full moon that appears larger and brighter than usual because it is closer to Earth in its orbit.

The moon follows an elliptical orbit around the Earth, meaning its distance from us varies throughout the month. When a full moon coincides with the point of its orbit closest to Earth, called perigee, it is called a supermoon, according to NASA.

Why does the moon sometimes appear red?

You may have noticed that the moon occasionally turns a dramatic shade of orange or red in the night sky. That's because of how sunlight hits the moon's surface after it passes through the atmosphere.

According to NASA, when the moon moves into the inner part of Earth's shadow, or umbra, some of the sunlight entering Earth's sky is scattered before it reaches the moon's surface.

Colors with shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet, scatter more easily than colors with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange. The more dust or clouds there are in the Earth's atmosphere during a lunar eclipse, the redder the moon appears.
