Here's the full release schedule for The Penguin: Find out when new episodes arrive on Max

Although The Penguin premiered on HBO and Max on September 19th, HBO is changing things up for the rest of the season.

“The Penguin” takes us back to Matt Reeves' version of Gotham City to tell a new story set in the city's criminal underworld. However, there is no sign of Robert Pattinson; You'll have to wait for The Batman 2 to see our newest live-action Dark Knight back in action.

Instead, this epic crime saga is all about Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell). Set in the weeks following the events of The Batman, this spin-off series explores the rise to power of one of Bruce Wayne's many enemies. And based on this season premiere, it looks like The Penguin will earn a spot on our list of the best Max series.

Although the very first episode aired last Thursday (September 19) and was repeated over the weekend – here's how to watch The Penguin if you missed it – new episodes will premiere in a different time slot.

Going forward, new episodes of “The Penguin” will instead air Sunday nights at 9pm ET/PT on HBO and Max; Here's the full release schedule so you know when each new chapter drops:

“The Penguin” Episode 3 – Sunday October 6th

Will we get season 2 of The Penguin?

At the time of writing, we don't know whether The Penguin will remain a limited, one-off series or not, as HBO has not made any official statement regarding the future of the series.

However, you can't see more of this particular incarnation of Oz Cobb without the actor playing Oz Cobb, and based on recent comments, it's unclear whether Colin Farrell is interested in returning because the show was so intense.

Speaking to Total Film, Farrell was asked if he was ready to put on the prosthetics and slip into Oz Cobb's headspace once again. While he said playing the role was “a powerful experience,” it didn't sound that way to excited about a comeback: “I don’t know, man,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got on my nerves a bit.

“Lauren (LeFranc, showrunner of The Penguin) said, 'If I could find a way that made sense, would you talk about it?' And I said, “Absolutely.” And maybe in a year I would do it. But when I finished I thought, 'I never want to wear that damn suit and that damn head again,'” Farrell added.

Should you stream The Penguin?

In a word, yes. Critically, the series does very well indeed: my colleague Malcolm McMillan described The Penguin as a must-see Max show, calling it “one of the best shows of the year so far”… and the show has It was a lot of fun and praise from other viewers too.

At the time of writing, The Penguin has a 94% critic score and an 89% audience score on review site Rotten Tomatoes. The site's critical opinion is: “Depicting Gotham through bone-crushing punches rather than bangs.” Onomatopoeia: “The Penguin is a grounded crime saga taken seriously by Colin Farrell and scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.”

Need a quick overview of what these positive reviews say? Well, The Guardian's Lucy Mangan gave the series a perfect 5-star review, calling it “a sophisticated and powerful beast” and a series packed with “enough action and heart to captivate existing fans and create many more.”

Do you still need an opinion? Empire writer Amon Warmann gave the series a 4-star review, claiming: “The Penguin is a spin-off that makes this return to Gotham feel both necessary and deserved, with excellent performances from Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.” “
