Honda is recalling 1.7 million vehicles due to defective steering gear components

Honda is recalling about 1.7 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. over concerns they may have a defective steering gear part that could pose a safety risk.

“American Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer for repairs as soon as they receive notification,” Honda said Wednesday.

The affected Honda Civic Sedan 2022-2025, Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan 2025, Honda Civic Hatchback 2022-2025, Honda Civic Hybrid Hatchback 2025, Honda Civic Type R 2023-2025, Honda CR-V 2023-2025, Honda CR-V 2023- 2025 V Hybrid, 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell, 2023-2025 Honda HR-V, 2023-2025 Acura Integra and 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S vehicles may have an “improperly manufactured steering gear worm wheel,” the automaker warned.

According to a recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), if the component is defective, it can “swell during use and reduce the thickness of the grease film between the worm gear and the worm wheel.” The spring preload on the worm gear may also be too high.

In the recalled vehicles, increased friction between these two parts “could increase steering effort and difficulty, increasing the risk of an accident or injury,” the report said.

According to the NHTSA report, the defective steering gear part and the problem it caused did not result in any injuries or deaths. The company has now made over 10,300 warranty claims.

“Registered owners of all affected models will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda or Acura dealer,” Honda said.

These notification letters will be sent with the recalled vehicles to Honda and Acura customers in November, the automaker said. Dealers have already been informed of the problem.

The solution involves the dealer installing an “improved” worm gear spring free of charge. According to Honda, they will also “redistribute or add grease” to the worm gear for free.

“Owners who paid at their own expense to have these repairs performed may be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA,” the report states.

The time frame in which Honda built the affected vehicles varied depending on the model.

American Honda sold more than 1.3 million Honda and Acura brand vehicles in 2023. Earlier this month, the company reported that year-to-date sales were nearly 1.06 million, including over 105,500 in September.
