Imani Christian responds to media reports about WPIAL investigation

A few weeks ago, one of the best young talents in WPIAL basketball, Imani Christian's Kieshaun Demus, was ruled ineligible by the league.

Now the school has released a statement in response to recent media reports about the WPIAL's investigation into their school.

“We wanted to respond to media reports related to the recently announced WPIAL investigation,” Imani said in a press release. “Due to a unique feature in the Imani enrollment process, new students will not be permanently enrolled until they attend a summer enrichment academy in July, even though all other aspects of the enrollment process are completed in May or June – a technical violation of the PIAA- Regulate May have occurred. Imani is in the process of implementing new procedures to ensure that even a potential breach does not occur in the future, and we look forward to working with the WPIAL on this. We are not aware of any facts or information that would support the assertion that there are systemic or general administrative problems with the Imani athletic department, and we look forward to working with WPIAL in this regard. Given the actual facts, media reports are exaggerated, potentially biased and inaccurate. It is unfortunate that such reports impact the performance of our student-athletes. We are proud of our students, of our location and of what our students do and continue to achieve academically, spiritually and athletically.”

Demus, a Class of 2027 graduate, was recently barred from his sophomore basketball season by the WPIAL at a hearing.

Demus began his career at North Hills before transferring to Imani Christian. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the hearing came about “because North Hills did not sign off on Demus' transfer and claimed that sportsmanship and/or recruiting were involved.”

This Post-Gazette report states: “…On Demus' transfer documents, North Hills checked a box that read: 'I am aware of other facts or circumstances that would lead me to believe that persons associated with the school “The transferred student is engaged in recruiting the student for the purpose of participating in athletics.'”

Demus received his first Division One basketball offer from Pepperdine last month.

Chris Harlan of TribLive.com reported that two other WPIAL athletes were also ruled ineligible.

“Demus was one of three transfers declared ineligible on Monday, joining Baldwin sophomore Dre'on Fuller and Avonworth freshman Jackson May,” Harlan said. “Fuller transferred from McKeesport and May came from North Hills. Both play football. Seltzer said the WPIAL board determined their transfers were also motivated by athletics.
