Internationals: Senegal qualify as Mheuka scores again | News | Official site

Nicolas Jackson played 70 minutes for Senegal as qualification for next year's Africa Cup of Nations was secured with a late winner in Malawi.

The Lions of Teranga had to wait until the sixth minute of injury time to beat the hosts in Lilongwe, the Malawian capital, despite having 75 percent possession. Sadio Mane's last-minute free kick was Senegal's 27th shot of the game.

It was Mane who came closest to scoring at the Bingu National Stadium as he missed good chances in both halves while Jackson threatened unsuccessfully on a couple of occasions. He was sent off with 20 minutes left, shortly after being shown a yellow card.

The result gives Senegal an unassailable seven-point lead over third-placed Burundi in Group L of the AFCON qualifiers. They still have two more qualifying games to play next month, including a game against leaders Burkina Faso, who also have ten points but a better goal difference. The tournament begins in December 2025 in Morocco. Then Senegal wants to regain the crown it won in Cameroon two years ago.

At youth level, Shumaira Mheuka scored again for the England Under-19 team as they concluded their warm-up games for next month's European Championship qualifiers with a 4-2 win over France.

Mheuka, who scored a big win against the Netherlands on Saturday, was the only Chelsea starter in Marbella this morning. He gave the Young Lions a 3-2 lead at the end of an entertaining first half that saw France overturn a two-goal deficit and calmly sidefoot a pass from Fulham's Josh King.

Harrison Murray-Campbell came on at half-time and Kiano Dyer, Tyrique George and Reiss Denny all came on around the hour mark before Lennon Wheldon extended England's lead. It ended 4-2 in Marbella, with England's attention now turning to November's qualifiers in this age group.
