Walgreens will close about 1,200 stores in the United States over the next three years, the pharmacy giant announced Tuesday. The closures come after an improved, albeit challenging, fiscal year, the company reported.

A recent earnings report found that while the chain was able to grow sales – retail pharmacy sector sales reached $29.5 billion in the fourth quarter, up 6.5% from the fourth quarter in 2023 – and its goal, In terms of costs, the company posted a loss of $3 billion in the last quarter.

Walgreens and other drugstore chains struggled to keep up with the competition. As USA TODAY reports, the chains are struggling with big-name competitors like Amazon and also struggling with declining drug reimbursement rates from prescription-filling middlemen.

CVS has laid off thousands of corporate and other employees since 2023 while grappling with “ongoing disruptions, regulatory pressures and evolving customer needs,” a spokesperson previously told USA TODAY. Since filing for bankruptcy about a year ago, Rite Aid has closed hundreds of stores across the U.S. after years of struggling to keep up with its larger rivals.

Walgreens said it will close 500 stores in 2025, but exact locations have yet to be announced.
