Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies left the game with an apparent ankle injury

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant was forced to withdraw from Monday night's first preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks after suffering an apparent ankle injury.

Morant's first absence was brief. He returned late in the second quarter after missing six minutes of play. Then he limped off the court again at the start of the third quarter, ending his night.

Morant first injured his ankle early in the second quarter. As he went back on defense, Mavs winger Naji Marshall attempted a diving pass that hit Morant's ankle. That led to the Grizzlies all-star twisting his ankle. He limped off the floor and quickly called for a substitute with 8:53 left in the second quarter.

It was somewhat surprising to see Morant return later in the second quarter of a preseason game, more than two weeks before the season opener, but he didn't appear to be limited. He scored seven points in four minutes before leaving the game early in the third quarter after a two-handed dunk.

While hobbling, Morant fouled a Mavs player and asked him to leave the game.

Memphis often takes a cautious approach to injuries. Considering Morant returned in the second quarter, that was a positive sign, but that decision backfired when the point guard left the game again.
