Jazz Chisholm Jr. Revels in Being ALDS Villain: “I Love That Shit”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jazz Chisholm Jr. leaned forward in the batter's box and whispered in catcher Salvador Perez's ear despite the deafening boos.

If you thought it might be a thank you to Perez for not taking a shot at Chisholm when he had the chance to refute the Yankees star's claim that the Royals were “lucky” to win the final game in a row and win back-and-forth playoff series, think again.

“I told him I love that shit,” Chisholm said Wednesday night after being vilified by angry Royals fans. “That’s exactly what I told Salvy.”

Chisholm was booed the loudest at the pregame introductions – and he ran to greet his teammates along third base and tell them he liked it too – and every time he pitched in Game 3 of the ALDS The turn came, but he was all smiles after the Yankees prevailed with a 3-2 win to take command of the series.

“It gets me flowing, it gets me going,” said Chisholm, who went 0-for-4 but played clean third base. “I hear the loud noises and everything is going on in my head. I’ve never seen anyone boo a bum.”

Teammates and manager Aaron Boone weren't worried about the impact of the reception.

“It’s good to have a little bit of that in the playoffs,” Boone said. “I don’t think he meant any disrespect. It made for a slightly better environment.”

Chisholm lit the fire after the Yankees had nothing to show for it in a Game 2 loss despite suffering a slew of hard-hit at-'em balls.

“We had a lot of opportunities tonight,” Chisholm said Monday. “They were just lucky.”

Boone then tried to fluster Chisholm by saying the nature of the questioning led him to misinterpret words.

But the friendly takeover at the trade deadline wasn't designed to prevent the reaction he expected at Kauffman Stadium.

“That’s the reaction I wanted,” Chisholm said. “I'm glad we got it. It got the team going.”

Chisholm said playing the role of the troll was “for me.”

“If I wasn’t a player they cared about or something like that, they wouldn’t be standing out there booing. They just let me do my thing,” Chisholm said. “Of course I reached a lot of people, right?”

It's almost certain that the boos will get louder on Thursday if the Yankees win the series. It wouldn't be hard for anyone to top the moment that made Chisholm laugh the most.

“There was this 27-year-old man, and I think he was imitating the girl at his side,” Chisholm said, before adopting a high-pitched voice. “He said, 'You're 0-for-3.' But he looked like a big man, and when he did it I almost cried. It was funny.”
