Created by Echo Wu, Jentry Chau versus the underworld is a new animated series about a Chinese-American high schooler whose life is turned upside down when a dangerous demon king tries to steal her powers. But make no mistake, Jentry is Also She overcomes her traditional teenage problems – like exploring romantic interests, dealing with an adult who always thinks he knows best, or bending over backwards to maintain a high social standing among her peers. Although it contains plenty of everything supernatural, it is largely rooted in true-to-life themes that will resonate with people of all ages and from all walks of life.

“Sometimes finding your identity means facing your own demons,” Wu tells Tudum. This feeling was the main reason the writers worked on the series. “That means different levels. (It) rings completely true to Jentry. (She) tries to figure out what these powers mean to her. Are they part of her? Do they curse them? You see this character trying to figure out who he is.”

It's not just the show's themes that are rooted in reality, the animation itself aims to immerse audiences in a world that's largely similar to our own – minus the ghosts and mythical creatures. “I wanted this show to feel very grounded,” Wu says. “I think it's refreshing when it comes to animation to have a series that isn't about this magical realm. I wanted it to feel real and for the characters to fit into our world.”

Wu's commitment to authentically portraying this time in a young woman's life extended to the way the series handled Jentry's coveted powers. “If a teenager had superpowers, I don't think they would handle it very well. I think she would actually hide it. She would consider it social suicide to have powers at a time in life when you're trying to fit in and be cool. It was an interesting dynamic to play with.”
