Jeremy Swayman appears to have achieved the Bruins' offseason goal

Jeremy Swayman had a clear goal during his contract negotiations with the Bruins, and it could have been achieved.

Swayman signed an eight-year, $66 million contract with Boston last offseason. The deal ended a lengthy stalemate between the teams and secured the goalkeeper's future with the team.

One of Swayman's goals during negotiations was to create the market for future goalkeepers. The first evidence that he did so was when Linus Ullmark signed a similar deal with the Ottawa Senators last week. On Thursday, the Dallas Stars also signed Jake Oettinger on the same financial terms.

Before the deal was officially announced, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the two sides were close to a deal and described the goaltender's extension as “in Jeremy Swayman territory.” Oettinger, who is the same age as Swayman, did not receive a contract on the scale of Carey Price or Sergei Bobrovsky. However, the average annual value of $8.25 million seems to be the optimal value for the teams.

The deals mean Swayman, Ullmark and Oettinger are tied for fourth highest-paid goaltenders in the NHL. It's not No. 1, but it's safe to say Swayman has dominated the goaltending market.
