King and Queen Camilla meet crowds at the Sydney Opera House in Parramatta Park

The opera house forecourt is a sea of plastic Union Jack hats and Australian flags as thousands of people eagerly await the arrival of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Banners are banned at security at the entrance gates (flowers were allowed through), but that hasn't stopped royal fans from finding original ways to show their support.

Kyla King, 56, from the Central Coast knitted herself a sun hat reminiscent of the Crown Jewels. She has already met members of the royal family, including Prince Harry and Catherine, Princess of Wales, and even shook hands with Queen Camilla.

But she still regrets not seeing the king when he appeared as the Prince of Wales alongside Diana, Princess of Wales at the Opera House in 1983.

“I’m usually at the front, but today I didn’t come down early,” she said.

“I would like to meet her, but probably everyone else too.”

Patrick Moli, 37, who moved to Sydney from Fiji a few months ago, wears his Australian flag in his hair. Fiji was originally planned as a stop on this royal tour, but was canceled following the King's cancer diagnosis. Moli said he came because he feared the monarch's poor health meant this could be his “only chance to see the king.”
