The body of British musician Liam Payne, who died in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, will not be returned to his family until authorities complete final clinical tests, a source told CNN on Saturday.

Authorities expect this to happen next week, but do not rule out that the results could be available as early as this weekend.

Geoff Payne, father of the former One Direction singer, arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday. The source told CNN that authorities allowed Payne to view his son's body at the morgue.

Payne also visited the hotel where his son was staying. CNN previously reported that Payne wanted to visit his son's room but was not allowed in due to the ongoing investigation. Instead, his father could see a similar room on another floor.

He also greeted fans outside the hotel, thanked them for their support and toured the memorial filled with photos, letters, candles and flowers.

Liam Payne died on Wednesday after falling from the third floor of his hotel. The cause of death was “polytrauma” with “internal and external bleeding,” according to the preliminary autopsy report, but toxicological tests are still pending.

The former One Direction star's fatal fall at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel on Wednesday remains under investigation by authorities, who are investigating the circumstances of his final moments.

The Argentine prosecutor's office said on Thursday: “Everything indicates that the musician was alone when the fall occurred.” The prosecution also suspects that Payne, who has previously spoken openly about his battle with addiction and his mental health , may have been “experiencing some kind of substance abuse episode” at the time.

Payne's tragic death sent fans and the music industry into an uproar, with tributes from celebrities pouring in from all corners of the world. His former band One Direction, which formed in 2010, remains one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik – the remaining members of One Direction – honored their friend and former bandmate on Thursday with a group statement and several individual memories.

“We are completely devastated by the news of Liam’s death,” the band said in a joint statement. “The memories we shared with him will be remembered forever.”

Malik announced Saturday that he was postponing his “Stairway To The Sky Tour” following Payne's death.

“In light of the heartbreaking loss I suffered this week, I have decided to postpone the US leg of the STAIRWAY TO THE SKY Tour,” Malik said on X. “Your tickets will remain valid for the new dates. I love you all and thank you for your understanding.”

In 2015, Malik left the group and a year later they disbanded after announcing they would be taking an “indefinite hiatus.”

All five former members pursued solo careers, including Payne, who released his latest single. “Tears” in March.

CNN's Michelle Watson and Susannah Cullinane contributed to this report.
