Liam Payne's cause of death revealed

The cause of death for former One Direction singer Liam Payne has been revealed.

According to a preliminary autopsy report, Payne died from “multiple traumas” and “internal and external bleeding” as a result of the fall he suffered from the balcony of the room on the third floor of the hotel in the Buenos Aires district of Palermo. He remains, according to the local prosecutor's office .

For protocol reasons, prosecutors said the incident was being investigated as a “doubtful death,” even though it appeared the musician was alone when the fall occurred. The office said Payne “experienced some sort of outburst due to substance abuse.”

The prosecution said that, given the position of the body and the injuries from the fall, it was reasonable to assume that Payne did not attempt to protect himself from the fall and may have been in a state of semi-consciousness or total unconsciousness.

According to the prosecutor's report, police experts investigating the crime scene found substances in Payne's hotel room that appeared to be “narcotics and alcoholic beverages, as well as several destroyed items and furniture.”

Five witnesses – three hotel workers and two women who had previously been in his room with the musician but left the hotel before Payne fell to his death – gave statements to the prosecution last night.

The prosecutor's office explained that “in addition to reconstructing the circumstances of the musician's death, the investigation also aims to establish the possible involvement of third parties in the events preceding the death of the victim.”

Payne, 31, died at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday after falling from the balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel, and his body was taken to the city's morgue, where forensic doctors performed the autopsy that night, prosecutors said .

As previously reported, hotel staff raised the alarm shortly before his death about Payne's seemingly erratic behavior, according to 911 calls.

A receptionist at the Hotel CasaSur Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina, told police that Payne's life was in danger, according to a recording of two 911 calls confirmed by the BBC, CNN and Sky News.

The hotel claimed Payne was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and was trashing his room at the time of the disturbance. The employees urgently called for help.

Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction, the pop group founded by Simon Cowell The X Factor Britain Season 7 in 2010, which also starred Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group released five studio albums from 2011 to 2015, all of which were certified platinum in the US, charted at number 1 or 2 in the US and UK, and charted in the top 10 worldwide.

It scored four No.1 singles in the UK: the debut “What Makes You Beautiful”, “Little Things”, “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)” – whose video was directed by Payne – and “Drag Me Down” . Five more reached No. 2 in the country and One Direction became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

Following the news of Payne's death, tributes poured in from across the music and entertainment industry.

In a statement, his family said: “We are heartbroken. Liam will live on in our hearts forever and we will remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We support each other as a family as best we can and ask for privacy and space during this terrible time.”
