Lincoln Riley on USC: “This is not a team that has two losses where we got our ass kicked”

After starting the season with two impressive wins, USC has lost two of its last three games. On Thursday, head coach of the Trojans Lincoln Riley addressed the team's recent losses and explained why he hasn't lost faith in his team.

“You’re constantly learning, growing and developing. These are those seasons,” Riley said. “There is definitely confidence and excitement. Are you frustrated that we didn't get these done? Of course there is. We want to win more than anyone else wants us to win, I promise you that. But we are still a very confident team.

“I mean, this is not a team that has two losses where we got our ass kicked. That is not the case. We know what we are capable of and we know we have a really good opponent and a phenomenal chance here on Saturday.”

USC's losses Michigan And Minnesota Both were seven points or less. While USC's loss to Michigan wasn't a surprise, the Trojans weren't expected to lose to the Golden Gophers.

In the loss, USC prevailed against Minnesota, but committed three turnovers, which ultimately cost the game. Additionally, the Trojans committed eight penalties for a total of 59 yards. Meanwhile, the Golden Gophers recorded just four penalties.

Although USC's performance against Minnesota was less than encouraging, the Trojans proved they can compete with top talent. In the season opener, USC defeated LSU 27-20 in a neutral location. LSU hasn't lost since then and is currently ranked 13th.

“We did it as a team,” Riley said. “We did it against a really good opponent in LSU. We know we are capable and that is not a question for us. We played against some good opponents. We presented them with some challenges and they presented us with some challenges.

“At the end of the day, you go back and have those teachable moments from those games and show those guys what you did well. Why did you put yourself in a position to win?”

USC needs to find a way to repeat its previous success this weekend. The Trojans face the No. 4 seed on Saturday Penn State at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on CBS.
