ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Aidan Hutchinson underwent surgery to repair the fractured tibia and fibula he suffered in Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys, and the Detroit Lions announced Monday that there is no immediate timetable for his return .

Hutchinson was injured with 11:43 left in the third quarter when his left leg hit teammate Alim McNeill while sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Hutchinson released Prescott from his grasp as he fell to the ground, and players from both teams gathered around him as he was attended to by medical staff at AT&T Stadium.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Sunday that Hutchinson would spend the night in a Dallas hospital.

“He was in pain, but we just told him we were going to have his back and play for Hutch, and I feel like we did that,” McNeill said. “That kind of threw everyone off in the middle of the game. We definitely told him we were definitely playing for Hutch. It was just scary to see.”

McNeill said he didn't initially know he had hit Hutchinson's leg while it was in the air.

“I didn't know if it was him or not, but I felt someone whip my leg and then I saw Hutch go down and I thought, 'Was it Hutch?'” McNeill said. “So I didn’t see it myself, so it was me? That's crazy. Yes, that's just wild to see. I hate this for him. I definitely wish you the best.”

The lions posted a medical update He said on social media at 10:15 a.m. Monday that Hutchinson had “successful surgery to repair a broken tibia and fibula at Baylor White Medical Center in Irving, Texas” on Sunday. The tibia and fibula are both located in the lower leg.

“Hutchinson will return to Detroit this week and is expected to make a full recovery,” the statement said. “There is currently no timetable for his return to play.”

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Hutchinson had a rod inserted into his leg during surgery and that his season is over and the injury typically takes six to eight months to recover.
