INDIANAPOLIS – Former Purdue star Zach Edey scored 23 points on 10 of 15 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds in his return to Indiana as the Grizzles beat the Pacers 120-116 in a preseason game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Monday night.

The Pacers went 1-2 in the preseason. The Grizzlies improved to 3-1.

Richmond, Indiana native Desmond Bane scored 23 points with Edey to lead the Grizzlies. Jarace Walker scored 15 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Pacers. Myles Turner added 12 points and seven rebounds. Bennedict Mathurin and Ben Sheppard also added 10 points. Cole Swider and James Wiseman had 10 each.

Jarace Walker scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to keep things interesting as the Pacers got back to within seven points with 4:20 left and an and-1 by Quenton Jackson in the final 25 seconds of the game brought the Pacers within five points and then his dunk brought them within four with 1.8 seconds left, but it wasn't quite enough.

A 3-pointer from Cole Swider and a driving layup plus a foul from Jarace Walker brought the Pacers as close as they have come in this game since the first quarter.

The Pacers started the fourth 7 of 9 from the floor with 2 of 3 3-pointers. Cole Swider scored one of them and he has seven points, which makes a pretty good argument for last place on the roster. Kendall Brown isn't there yet, which suggests, but perhaps isn't a guarantee, that Swider has the inside scoop.

The Pacers' offense improved as the night went on, but getting stops wasn't any easier. The Grizzlies won the third period 31:29. Zach Edey had 10 points and six rebounds in the period and Memphis shot 11 of 22 from the floor.

The Pacers were 11 of 20 and James Wiseman scored 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting in the third period, but he also couldn't slow Edey down when he was out there.

The Pacers continue to struggle and Edey puts on an even bigger show. He has 21 points and nine rebounds and the Grizzlies are shooting over 50% and scoring 1.23 points per possession.

Myles Turner and Obi Toppin are apparently done for the evening and Rick Carlisle puts James Wiseman on the floor to try and combat Edey's size. Wiseman didn't do a particularly good job of keeping up with Edey's force.

Edey had four points and five rebounds in the first five minutes of the second half.

After excellent performances on Thursday against the Cavaliers, Bennedict Mathurin and Jarace Walker are in the starting lineup tonight and they are both struggling, especially Mathurin. He's 0 of 4 from the field so far, has two points on free throws and his main defensive effort has been Desmond Bane, who has a game-high 18 points at halftime. Walker had some better moments, including a three-pointer, two rebounds and two assists, but he also had three turnovers.

Turnovers were a problem across the board, as the Pacers had eight of them, leading to 13 Grizzlies points. This is in addition to their overall offensive woes as they shoot 17 of 39 from the floor (43.6%), including 6 of 16 from 3, for 0.97 points per possession. Memphis, meanwhile, is 23 of 48 from the floor and is getting excellent work from Purdue's Zach Edey, who settled in well in his return to state with 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting. The Grizzlies are averaging 1.16 points per possession.

Myles Turner had some good moments, even if Edey was difficult to guard. He had 12 points with seven rebounds. Andrew Nembhard has 10 points.

Zach Edey and Myles Turner have a pretty fun fight inside. Edey had 13 points and had some really good plays. Turner forced Edey to step out and guard him, and Turner had 10 points and seven rebounds. However, the Pacers are still struggling, going 15 of 36 from the floor.

Zach Edey checked in in the sixth minute of the first quarter, received great cheers upon his arrival and even more thanks to three throws in the first quarter. The first was a hook shot from a double team. The second was a simple dunk after a drive-and-dish from point guard Yuki Kawamura. The last one was a spectacular spin move. At the end of the first half he had six points and two rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Pacers made just six of 19 field goals in the first quarter and scored 0.72 points per possession, while the Grizzlies scored 1.26 points.

The revamped lineup doesn't look particularly good right from the start on both sides. On offense, the Pacers are 2 of 9 from the floor and 1 of 6 from 3, with Andrew Nembhard's 3-pointers accounting for more than half of the total. They are stodgy on defense and Memphis takes advantage. Grizzliers are 6 of 14 from the floor, but 3 of 6 from 3 getting some open ones on slow rotation.

The Pacers announced their starting five much earlier than usual due to several players missing. It follows.

PG – Andrew Nembhard

SG – Benedict Mathurin

SF – Jarace Walker

PF – Obi Toppin

C-Myles Turner

The Grizzlies starting lineup follows

PG – Scotty Pippen Jr.

SG – Desmond Bane

SF – Jake LaRavia

PF – Santi Aldama

C-Brandon Clarke

The Pacers announced before the game that Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, Aaron Nesmith and TJ McConnell would sit out Monday night's game. Rookie winger Johnny Furphy will also miss his third straight game with an ankle injury.
