Live updates: Trump attends charity dinner, Harris campaigns in Wisconsin ahead of Election Day

The campaigns of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are online with several new ads this week as the presidential race enters its final stretch.

Here's a summary of the new spots airing and some data on how the overall tone of both sides' messages compare:

Positive versus negative messages

The campaigns and their allies' ads cover a wide range of competing issues and also reflect different strategies when it comes to their overall tone.

Advertising tracking company AdImpact categorizes the tone of campaign ads aired on television as “positive,” “negative,” or “contrasting.” Comparing the share of each site's spending on ads in each tone shows how advertisers allocate their messaging budget.

And the data shows that the Trump campaign and its allies are engaging in mostly negative advertising. By comparison, the data for the Harris campaign and its allies reflects a more balanced approach.

New Trump campaign ads

Trump's presidential campaign has launched five new TV ads so far this week, leveling a wide range of criticism of Harris.

Nearly all of the ads focus on immigration and border security, condemn Harris' actions and attempt to link illegal immigration to other issues, including crime, entitlement and transgender health policy – a major focus of the GOP's campaign ads so far in October.

One of the notable new spots revisits comments Harris made on “The View” last week when she was asked how she should govern differently than President Joe Biden, and replied, “I can't think of anything.”

New Harris campaign ads

On the other hand, the Harris campaign produced a massive wave of 13 unique new TV ads so far this week, leveraging its prohibitive financial advantage in the final stretch of the race.

The ads reflect a varied approach, combining spots that promote Harris' policies and contrast with Trump's policies, in addition to a series of hard-edged attacks – and they also show a highly individualized strategy, with several spots targeting key swing states and local focuses represent voters and issues.
