Local reporter identified as woman injured in Lakewood shooting

LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Lakewood police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured Monday morning.

According to authorities, officers responded just before 8 a.m. on Chase Avenue between Merl Avenue and Clifton Boulevard to a report of an argument between two people.

On the way, the officers told the control center that they had probably heard shots. When they arrived, they found a man and a woman on the sidewalk below. The man was dead and the woman was seriously injured by at least one shot. A weapon was found nearby. Police believe they knew each other.

The woman was treated at the scene by officers and members of the Lakewood Fire Department and then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, authorities said. Her current condition is unknown.

According to Cleveland 19 News, the woman is one of the station's reporters, Winnie Dortch.

“This morning our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack. She was immediately taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries. Our prayers are with her, her young daughter and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community,” said Brian Sinclair, news director for Cleveland 19 News.

According to Lakewood Police Capt. William O. Albrecht, the man was identified as Bryant Carter, 34, of Bedford. No further information was released.
