Matthew Boyd is ready to suit up for the Guardians in ALCS Game 3: Here's how he compares to the Yankees' lineup

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Growing up in Seattle, Matthew Boyd's father coached 18U baseball in the summer, and it gave the Guardians' left-hander the perspective of viewing the game through a coach's lens.

Boyd would put himself in the batsman's shoes and try to figure out what each player was doing, or look at the guys on deck and think about what they saw. For him, it was a fun way to grasp small details and decipher the game's strategies.

And then it was time to compete.

Boyd is looking forward to Thursday's competition when he receives the ball for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Yankees at Progressive Field. With the Guardians facing an 0-2 hole, Boyd knows what to expect for him and his teammates. But the 10-year veteran wasn't discouraged as he spoke to reporters on Thursday.

“You have to go out there and compete against them,” Boyd said. “The game will dictate everything else that needs to happen. But it's the offseason; You want to compete against the best. You wouldn’t have it any other way.”
