One of McDonald's most iconic and iconic sandwiches is returning to Central Illinois – for a limited time, of course.

The McRib is expected to appear on the Springfield McDonald's menu in mid-November, according to a local manager.

A second general manager at a separate location in Springfield confirmed that while a date wouldn't be announced until late October, the sandwich served hot with crispy fries would likely return next month.

For those who don't know, the McRib consists of a narrow, boneless pork patty shaped like a miniature rib for aesthetic purposes, which is then dipped in barbecue sauce and placed on a sandwich bun with onions and pickles. McDonald's first executive chef, René Arend, who created the McNugget, also created the McRib.

The spicy sandwich was developed in 1981 to address the chicken shortage due to high demand for chicken nuggets and increased poultry prices. The item was sold until 1985, when it was removed from the menu due to infrequent purchases and has been a recurring dish ever since, best served floating in it.

It would come back – it always comes back.

The last time the McRib was seen on the menu was a week before Thanksgiving in 2023, after the Golden Arches announced that their farewell tour of the McRib in November 2022 would be the sandwich's final appearance.

The sandwich enjoyed such a following that a superfan named Alan created the McRib Locator in 2008. The website allows users to track McRibs near them. The “last sighting” was logged on September 30 by a user in the United Kingdom.

While not confirmed yet, the meal typically hits stores across the country around Thanksgiving and has been confirmed to be available again in Missouri on November 27, 2024.
