The MLB postseason is here and after a thrilling final day of the regular season that saw the Braves and Mets split a doubleheader to both get into the playoffs and keep the Diamondbacks out, the four-season season kicked off on Tuesday. Wild Card Series. The Tigers opened Game 1 with a win over the Astros.

Tigers 3, Astros 1

For the first time in 11 years, the Detroit Tigers won a playoff game, defeating the Houston Astros 3-1 on Tuesday to win Game 1 of their AL Wild Card Series.

Behind a brilliant performance from AL Triple Crown winner Tarik Skubal — six innings pitched, four hits and no runs allowed, one walk and six strikeouts — the Tigers pounced on the Astros' pitching early. Framber Valdez ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing a walk and four hits. Valdez exited after just 4 1/3 innings.

The Astros didn't go quietly, however. They threatened in the fourth when Yordan Alvarez led off with a single and walked Skubal Yainer Diaz. But back-to-back strikeouts from Jeremy Peña and Victor Caratini negated the threat. In the ninth, Alvarez hit a leadoff double and a single by Alex Bregman put runners on the corners with no one out. Yainer Diaz got the Astros on the field with an RBI single, Peña advanced runners with a sacrifice bunt and Tigers manager AJ Hinch replaced closer Jason Foley with Beau Brieske. The right-hander quickly got one out and was just one strike away from ending the game before sending Chas McCormick to load the bases. But Jason Heyward did everything he could to finish the game, and the Tigers won Game 1.

  • NYM-MIL: Brewers get another run on RBI HBP

    With the bases loaded and two outs, Severino hit Rhys Hoskins on the hands to make it 2-0 for the Brewers. But Sal Frelick then ends the inning with a groundout.

  • NYM-MIL: The Brewers strike first

    The Brewers come onto the field first with three goals in a row and open the game against Luis Severino. William Contreras delivered the RBI single.

  • KC-BAL: Royals draft Cole Ragans

    After six scoreless innings and 80 pitches, Cole Ragans' day is over. Sam Long is now set to start the seventh for the Royals. Ragans officially left the game with left calf cramps.

  • NYM-MIL: Freddy Peralta initially starts with a 1-2-3

    Meanwhile, at the Mets-Brewers, Freddy Peralta pitches a perfect pitch in Game 1, but Brandon Nimmo made him work for it. After Francisco Lindor and Jose Iglesias struck out, Nimmo worked an eight-pitch bat that ended with an infield pop-up.

  • Brieske gets Heyward to beat Spencer Torkelson and that's it from Houston. The Tigers win Game 1 of their AL Wild Card series 3-1.

    Houston's streak of 10 straight playoff opening victories comes to an end.

    The Astros will be eliminated in Game 2 on Wednesday at 2:32 p.m. ET (ABC).

  • Brieske walks Chas McCormick and the bases are loaded for Jason Heyward with two outs.

  • Caratini flies to left field. Not deep enough to hit Bregman from third point. Two away games for the Tigers.

  • Peña makes a successful sacrifice bunt as the runners move to second and third base. Now one is out and AJ Hinch goes to the bullpen.

  • Royals 1, Orioles 0

    Finally we have a run in Baltimore. Bobby Witt Jr. hit an RBI single to score Maikel Garcia and put the Royals ahead by one in the sixth.

  • Yainer Diaz squeaks one after the other for an RBI single.

    3-1 Tigers and the Astros are now first and second with no one out and Jeremy Peña ahead.

  • Trey Sweeney's diving stop up the middle prevents Dezenzo from scoring, but Alex Bregman makes it. First and third: No outs for the Astros.

  • Yordan Álvarez led off the bottom of the 9th with a double off the left field wall. Zach Dezenzo comes in for a pinch run.

  • The Royals overcame a potentially costly fielding error by MJ Melendez in the bottom of the fifth. Melendez misplayed a one-out fly ball from Ramón Urías in left field and what was supposed to be an out turned into a double instead.

    A single by Cedric Mullins then put runners on the corners. But Cole Ragans got out of trouble with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning, and we remain scoreless until the fifth.

  • Jason Foley comes into the game to close out the Astros. He made 28 saves in 69 regular season appearances for the Tigers.

  • Josh Hader keeps the Tigers off the field. The Astros are through their last three outs with Detroit leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

  • A great play by Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. With Yuli Gurriel on first with no outs, Royals outfielder MJ Melendez smoked a line drive from Corbin Burns down the first base line.

    Mountcastle grabbed the ball as he was fouled and then tagged the base for a double play since Gurriel had gone first.

    Corbin Burnes then struck out Tommy Pham to end the fifth inning. The duel of pitchers and the scoreless tie lasted until the end of the fifth quarter.

  • Holton gets Kyle Tucker to ground out weakly to third base, and the Tigers go into the 9th inning up 3-0 with three outs to clinch Game 1.

  • Will Vest leaves the game for the Tigers after a dominant performance. He faced five batters, struck out four of them and did not allow a hit.

    Tyler Holton is now on track to reach the final out in the 8th inning.

  • Cole Ragans countered with a 1-2-3 inning for the Royals. In four innings, the Orioles managed two baserunners against Ragans. The Royals only managed one goal against Corbin Burnes. Neither pitcher walked a batter. Neither team scored a goal.

  • Matt Viering is thrown out at second base to end the inning after a strong throw from Astros catcher Yainer Diaz.

    By the end of the eighth quarter, the Tigers were up 3-0.
