More rain hits Florida right after Milton

Some South Florida cities are expecting more rain this weekend, just days after Hurricane Milton devastated the state.

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane before crossing the state and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Milton arrived just two weeks after Hurricane Helene caused damage across Florida. Before the recent storm, tornadoes raged across Florida, including in the area of the Miami National Weather Service (NWS) office.

While efforts to clear and recover the debris continue, the NWS office in Miami warned that more rain is on the way.

“Rain chances will continue to increase over the weekend as moisture-rich easterly flow interacts with a frontal boundary and a weak low pressure area develops,” said X, formerly Twitter, on Friday afternoon. “While the amounts are not expected to be extremely effective, they could hinder Milton’s recovery efforts.”

The hardest-hit areas in Florida were on the state's Gulf Coast, where Milton made landfall. Hundreds of thousands of people remain without power as damage, primarily from tornadoes, spreads across southern Florida and the state's Atlantic coast.

NWS meteorologist Shawn Bhatti recounted Newsweek that South Florida issued 55 tornado warnings on the Wednesday before Milton's arrival. As of Friday, there were six confirmed tornadoes. Although the rain did not cause much damage in the Miami area during Milton, the incoming rain could hamper recovery efforts related to the tornadoes.

According to a precipitation potential map included with the post, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Homestead have the highest chances of rain. The heaviest and widespread rain is expected to fall on Sunday.

“While 1-2” is most likely through Monday, it is possible that some locations could get about 2 to 4 inches of rain, “with the majority falling on Sunday,” NWS Miami wrote. “In very isolated locations, the worst case scenario could be 4-6 (inches).”
