Northern Lights in Oklahoma this week

Northern Lights in Oklahoma this week

The Sun has been quite active this week, sending highly charged particles to Earth via the solar wind. When the particles reach Earth, they collect near the poles due to the Earth's magnetic field. When the particles are very highly charged, they can sometimes create colorful lights in the sky. These lights are commonly referred to as the Northern Lights because they are much more common at latitudes closer to the North Pole. But this week these colorful light displays were seen as far south as Oklahoma and Texas.

Monday evening and Thursday evening the lights were predominant in the Oklahoma sky and some of our KTUL Stormchasers were able to capture some amazing images for our viewing pleasure. David Gaede took an incredible photo in Oologah on Monday evening and another in Skiatook on Thursday evening.

Storm chaser Nacoma Hutchison also captured some beautiful color in the town of Jay, OK.

The Northern Lights Forecast offers Oklahomans another chance to see the dancing colorful lights on Friday evening, and the sky forecast is favorable! If you would like to see more images of the Northern Lights here in Oklahoma this week, check out NewsChannel8's Facebook page and check out the comments section of our Northern Lights post. We hope to see you there!
