Authorities are investigating a freight train derailment that occurred Tuesday morning in East Austin.

Seven train cars – five empty and two carrying gravel – overturned on the train tracks near East Sixth Street and Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street at 3:44 a.m., the Austin Fire Department said. They said one of the train cars also struck a utility pole, causing a power outage in the area that affected about 80 customers.

No injuries were reported and the wagons were not carrying hazardous materials, the fire department said. The train consists of 90 wagons.

The derailment is being investigated by the Austin Fire Department, the Texas Department of Transportation, CapMetro and the Federal Railroad Administration, CapMetro spokesman Jorge Ortega said. He said the cause of the derailment had not yet been determined. Authorities have yet to say when the railway might reopen.

Ortega said the derailment affected the CapMetro commuter rail line and they were using buses to transport customers from the MLK, Plaza Saltillo and Downtown stations.

Traffic is blocked on East Sixth Street between Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street and Pedernales Street, Austin police said. Authorities urged the public to find alternative routes while the tracks were cleared.
