Officials say more than a million voters cast ballots in the key swing state of North Carolina.

As of Sunday afternoon, four days after in-person early voting began in the state, 1,008,123 ballots had been cast, the North Carolina State Board of Elections said in a news release. That’s 13% of the state’s 7.8 million registered voters.

The 863,000 voters who cast ballots during the first three days of in-person early voting in North Carolina represented a 2.4% increase over the same period in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic affected people's voting choices changed.

“It's been an incredibly busy few days. Please thank those in your community who are making your vote count,” Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the Board of Elections, said in a statement.

North Carolina is one of seven states that could decide the election. The benchmark for voter turnout is just under two weeks until election day.

Polls show Trump and Harris running a tight race in North Carolina

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are facing off in a presidential election that is shaping up to be extremely close. Recent FiveThirtyEight polls show Trump leading Harris by less than a percentage point in the Tar Heel State, while Harris is 1.7 points ahead of Trump nationally.

Democrats haven't won the state since 2008.

Parts of North Carolina were hit hard by Hurricane Helene earlier this month. Harris has toured the destruction and visited donation centers, and Trump has raised money for those affected and spread misinformation about President Joe Biden's response to the disaster.

A new USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll shows Harris leading Trump 63% to 34% nationally among those who have already voted. Among those who plan to wait until Election Day to vote, Trump leads 52%-35%.

Trump appears in North Carolina on Monday while Harris tours other swing states with former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.
