Patriots safety: Jabrill Peppers charged with assault in Massachusetts

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers is charged with assault, strangulation and drug possession in connection with an “altercation between two individuals” Saturday morning in Braintree, police said.

In a statement Monday, police said Peppers, 29, was arrested after officers responded to a residential address in Braintree early Saturday morning.

The statement did not specify the time of response or the specific address.

“The caller stated that there was an argument between two people,” police wrote. “An investigation ensued and 29-year-old Jabrill Peppers was arrested.”

Peppers is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Quincy District Court on charges of strangulation, assault, assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a Class B substance, suspected to be cocaine, police said.

Police did not provide any information about the victim or his connection to Peppers.

Peppers did not play in the Patriots' loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday after being downgraded to out on Saturday. He was listed as questionable during practice on Thursday and Friday.

On Monday morning, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about Peppers' arrest during Mayo's appearance on WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show.”

“He called me that morning,” Mayo said. “I knew what was going on. We notified the NFL of what was going on and we are still gathering information.”

Mayo was asked if Peppers was still on the team, and Mayo deferred comment: “I don't think anyone knows the facts. It’s a process.”

A Patriots spokesperson released the following statement Monday morning.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend which police are currently investigating. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Peppers, 29, signed a one-year deal with the Patriots in April 2022 and has since signed two new deals with New England, most recently a three-year extension he signed over the summer. The 5-11, 217-pounder was named team captain before the start of the regular season.

This is a developing story.
