PBS character Xavier Riddle celebrates Alvin Ailey at the Whitney

Funday takes place at the Whitney Museum of American Art on Sunday, with a real-life version of a beloved PBS Kids character joining in a celebration of the late legendary dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Xavier Riddle, the main character of “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum,” will participate in a day of Ailey-inspired activities to build excitement for Whitney’s “Edges of Ailey” show, which the museum describes as “the first major show ” designated. “A large-scale museum exhibition celebrating” the famous choreographer.

The exhibition is part visual art, part live performances and part archival material.

Sunday activities, free as part of the museum's Free Second Sundays initiative, include West African dance classes, live music from Jazz at Lincoln Center and the opportunity to take photos with Xavier Riddle.

Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum is based on a popular book in which the title character and his friends learn about historical figures, including Ailey.

The Whitney will be showing the Xavier Riddle Ailey episode and will have the artist on-site to teach children and adults how to draw Ailey or someone they care about.

“Edges of Ailey” opened Sept. 25 and consists of an 18,000-square-foot immersive exhibition featuring more than 80 artists on the fifth floor and performances in the third-floor theater. It runs until February 9th.

Although this Sunday is free, tickets are required. They can be reserved in advance at whitney.org/admission.
